Handbook for Mortals: Guidance for People Facing Serious Illness

Average review score:

Handbook for Mortals is a must.Death comes to us all - whether it's sudden or gradual; whether it's our own or someone close - leaving this garment, quitting this life, passing on to the next Grand Adventure. In each chapter of this detailed, simply written, expressive & compassionate volume, are poignant poems, soothing photos & sidebars of lists to walk us through from Living With Serious Illness to Finding Meaning to Helping Family Make Decisions and Give Care; from getting the Help You Need to Talking With Your Doctor; from Controlling Pain to Planning Ahead; from Hastening Death to The Dying of Children to Enduring Loss & beyond. A huge crew of researching assistants from the Center to Improve Care of the Dying out of George Washington University, put this Handbook for Mortals together & the caring insights, profound realizations & ordinary instructions make for a really useful book you can pick up at any time & not worry about disturbing someone in the middle of the night or during their busy work day.
Handbook for MortalsI found this book days after leaving the hospital with a two year prognosis for a misdiagnosed illness. My head was spinning. I was making lists of questions and to do lists for leaving my 2 young children. Finding this book was a wonderful gift. It answered my questions and provided a realistic outlook for what to expect of a terminal condition. The book provides sample statements for calling your relatives and helps you to prepare for your doctor appointments. I visited a doctor today and I led the session and all of my questions were addressed before the exam occurred. This book should be recommended to all diagnosed with a terminal illness. Highly recommended book!
Very useful in a difficult timeI wish I had picked up this book earlier in my step-father's illness. Very useful for those who are facing illness or who love someone who is very ill, telling you the kinds of things to expect and ways of dealing them.

Healing Centers & Retreats: Healthy Getaways for Every Body and Budget
Published in Paperback by Avalon Travel Publishing (September, 1998)
Average review score:

The definitive guide to alternative healing centers. It's been a long time coming but my search is finally over. I have been waiting for a book of this type to come along since I was first diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis. Finding contemporary medicine unable to treat the pains I suffer, I soon began seeking "alternative" medicine. I was shocked to find so little information available and it soon became a struggle to combine work and healing on my very frequent business travels. Now with Ms. Miller's book always tucked away at my desk I am sure to find a center to fill my needs. I find her guide to be accurate, concise and interesting. Her descriptive style entices me to try new places and new treatments. I wish this book had been written five years ago, it sure would have saved me a lot of time, trouble and headaches. I seriously recommend this book as a must for travel agencies with clientele looking for "alternative" vacations. They and their clients will not be disappointed.
So many ways to heal ourselves, so little time.Thank Buddha for this most insightfull guide. Now I know where to go in order to get what I need. I feel much better just knowing that this is out there. Not only did it save me time in finding my perfect retreats it was also enjoyable to read. Ms. Miller's writting really held my interest, she is quite witty and amusing.
Sensational! Very informative.Everything you wanted to know about holistic healing retreats, but didn't know where to look. This book was a wealth of information and helped with many of my unanswered questions.

A Heart at Fire's Center: The Life and Music of Berhard Herrmann
Published in Paperback by University of California Press (May, 2002)
Average review score:

Superb biography of a legendary composer! The true test of a film book is, does it make you want to see the films discussed? The true test of a composer's biography is, does it make you want to listen to the composer's music? Steven C. Smith's A HEART AT FIRE'S CENTER scores on both counts. This is a throroughly detailed and fascinating biography of a composer whose influence continues to be felt in film music (take a listen to the opening theme of M. Night Shyamalan's SIGNS - James Newton Howard has obviously been listening to Herrmann's PSYCHO suite). With wonderful details on Herrmann's collaborations with Orson Welles, Alfred Hitchcock, Francois Truffaut and Martin Scorcese, this is a must-have book for every student of American film - and film music.
storm at heart's centerSteven Smith's study of the life of Bernard Herrmann thoroughly traces the development of Herrmann's career with all of it's frustrations and many of it's achievements. The author takes great care to portray Herrmann's complex personality frequently given to outbursts of anger and frustration to even his closest supports and friends. Herrmann's disappointments in his less than successful conducting career, struggles to achieve acceptance as a composer of serious music, and blow ups with major directors including Hitchcock , with whom some of his greatest film scores were achieved, are well documented by Smith. Herrmann's early work to promote the music of Charles Ives, including recordings of movements of two of Ive's symphonies are described. Quoting the composer's views of music for film and the aesthetics of film, the author has written a throughly documented and enjoyable book for those interested in an important composer of 20th century American film scores.
A very detailed look at an infuriating composer. The story of Bernard Herrmann does not begin and end with Hitchcock. It actually begins with Charles Ives and ends with Martin Scorcese. Along the way Orson Welles, Francios Trouffet, Brian DePalma, Sinbad, Gulliver, Rod Serling, and the "It's Alive" baby turn up. A biography of Bernard Herrmann tells the history of the use of music in radio, television, and film. It also tells the story of a brilliant, infuriating, and ultimately tragic figure. If you have an interest in film composing - real composing, not gathering 10 pop songs on a CD and calling it a soundtrack - you owe it to yourself to read this biography. And better yet would be to listen to some of his music while reading - the book vividly describes the music but hearing is believing.

Japanese Society (Center for Japanese and Korean Studies)
Published in Paperback by University of California Press (March, 1986)
Average review score:

If you would seek to understand Japan, read this book. While no book can give you full understanding of culture, Japanese Society opens the door to understanding. The style, while academic, is clear and accessible. The book is concise and informative. Anime and manga fans, as well as Japanophiles, will find that this text clears up a lot of the strange interactions to be found in popular Japanese culture.
A long-selling bookThis book is a long-selling book and can be found in almost any local bookstore in Japan. The contents are worth reading for many Japanese, not only for those interested in an introduction to Japanese society and education. I believe that many Japanese are hoping that the systems and structures change and thus a book like this has become a best seller.
One of the bestWhat Professor Nakane wrote in this book is still true in Japan. In contrast to the Edwin O. Reischauer's books, Nakane's book contains truths.
I recommend this book to anyone dealing with Japanese.

Gentle Birth Choices: A Comprehensive Book and Video Guide Making Informed Decisions About Birthing Centers, Birth Attendants, Water Birth, Home Birth, Hospital Birth
Published in Paperback by Inner Traditions Intl Ltd (December, 1996)
Average review score:

Excellent and Informative!I highly recommend purchasing this book/video set as opposed to just the book. The book is wonderful, and will help any pregnant woman make sound, informed decisions on how to approach her individual birth. The video shows the births of several babies-which is wonderful and educational to watch. Both book and video are extremely high-quality and worth every penny you may spend on them. The set is slightly biased against our medical establishment here in the USA, and I do want to warn some of you out there to absorb the information that works for you, and just listen to the rest with an open mind and a grain of salt. The video is what really changed my mind about my approach to the upcoming birh of my son-I strongly recommend this set for every pregnant woman, whether she is interested in natural child-birth or not.
GET THIS SET!!!I originally borrowed this book to read and later saw the video at a doula training workshop I attended! I had to have them both the minute that I saw the video! They are both great... The book is informative and the set INCREDIBLE! They are such a learning tool! I highly recommend them to every woman who is pregnant or who is any type of childbirth educator, doulas, etc.
Gentle Birth Choices - VideoAs a doula, I have not only watched and enjoyed this video, but also shared it with many of my clients. It gives a wonderful view of several different types of births, helping the future parent make educated decisions about the type of birth they want. It also is very realistic in terms of what to expect during labor. I look forward to reading the book after enjoying the video for so long!

JOURNEY TO CENTER
Published in Paperback by Fireside (October, 1997)
Average review score:

Lovely BookThis is a great inspirational book, but it's funny as well. The author is self-effacing and never misses a chance to poke fun at himself, which seems to show that the lessons that he speaks of have been well-learned. He writes like a lay-Buddhist.
Greatest Positive Effect on my life from any self-help bookDue to various emotional baggage and lack of the skills needed to advance myself, I have been unable, until now, to use any of the plethora of self-help methods from any other book. My skill in concentration was non-existant. I walked around every single day with a humongous knot of anxiety in my gut. This book has literally changed all that. It is not the magic save-all. It is merely the best way I have ever found to begin my journey through life. It is now the basis for everything I do. To those who read it: Read it through at least once. Try it. Then augment it with other techniques and advancement methods. Just don't stop and always stay centered.
an exceptional work of artJourney to Center was probably a great book for me because I had the chance to actually meet the writer. And to know the writer and then read his book, gives a more deeper understanding and meaning to what is being said. Journey to Center is funny, moving, and can be very emotional at times. Thomas Crum is a great writer, one who talks to you through his books, not just write to you. It was very inspirational. One of my favorites!
